Sponsor with Rejoice

The Rejoice bus left the school at Doi Saket 15km from Chiang Mai having given 13year old Supakit his vitamins and lunch money. It was late November 2006 and a month before Diana had expected to be in England preparing for Christmas. Yet, here she was with her sister Carole, out with the Rejoice Team helping HIV/Aids patients and orphans.

Her acceptance of an unexpected invitation to a wedding in Perth,Western Australia; the decision to stop-over in Thailand and visit her eldest son in Chiang Mai - her first trip outside Europe had been one surprise after another. Outdoor wedding, kangaroos, Bangkok and its temples, riding an elephant and now seeing a charity at work with the poor of south-east Asia.

Back in England however a small incident whilst with Rejoice kept coming to mind. A class of 5 year olds had walked by, in pairs neatly holding hands, and one girl was not wearing school uniform.

Rejoice Director Steve Hallam explained "The education is free; but not the uniform, books, pencils etc. this and the cost of transport and lunch may be beyond the means of the poorest families."

Diana and Carole now sponsor Supakit 13 years old who lives with his uncle and goes to school at Doi Saket and 14 year old Kwanjai who lives with her grandmother and goes to school at Sansai. They gave the 7,000 Thai Baht (about 200US dollars) to each student to support them for a year.

There are many more that need help. Please contact Rejoice today.

7,000 Baht provides:
School uniform, scout uniform, sports kit, school bag, books, pencil set plus transport to school and school lunch for a year. Send a little extra and we will send you photographs of your student and updates on their progress.

ARE YOU HIV+?

It's not all about money. The fight against HIV moves forward at a rapid pace, but never perfectly. Huge treatment and information gaps still exist and new ones keep forming. At this time, the focus of some of our work is shifting to support clients who are on, what are seen in Europe and the United States, as first generation anti-retroviral drugs, drugs which no longer carry international patents. Side effects can be severe. We believe that some of the best sources of information for dealing with these, are the people who have worked with, or experienced, side effects from these drugs themselves. In turn, we hope we can use this information in support to our clients.

Drugs currently freely issued in Thailand are cocktails in various combinations of the following: DDI - Dideoxyinosine (also known as Didanosine), D4T “ Stavudine, 3TC “ Lamuvidine, Nevarapine and Efaverenz. We would be particularly grateful for information as to how you might have complemented by diet, with vitamins etc., or by complementary therapies. All information, will be treated as confidential.

Volunteers Welcome

We find the most effective way of winning your long-term support, is for you to come and see the work for yourself. If you are interested in spending some time working with us in Chiang Mai, it might be possible to join us at a time that suits you. Please check this page for information about volunteers and how you can be a part of the Rejoice volunteer effort.

The First Steps in Volunteering...

In the first instance, please email us and tell us briefly about yourself and how you would like to volunteer. At a later date, we will ask you for a current CV, a recent photograph, and two letters of reference.

References must come from past or present employers or college/university tutors, and not from friends and family.

We will process your application when we receive all your documents and have checked your references. Completion takes about 2 weeks assuming all conditions have been met.

If you are coming to work at the project, please indicate the dates that you are available, stating your start and finish dates but note that we ask that all volunteers stay a minimum of one week, and a maximum of two months. We are not usually able to accept volunteers for longer than two months. Special considerations can be made for individuals who are interested in volunteering as part of a college/university course, or involved in research designed to improve HIV care and awareness.

For individuals or residents of Chiang Mai who live permanently in the Chiang Mai province, we prefer you to work for a maximum of one or two days per week, unless we are engaged in a new project which requires the extra hours.

We welcome volunteers who aspire to being compassionate, innovative, team-oriented, yet independent, self-starters. We need volunteers who are self-sufficient and able to work with or without supervision.

We recognise the importance of a harmonious working environment, especially for our clients, though also for employees and other volunteers at the clinics and at the office. We therefore reserve the right to refuse any applicant, without providing justification. We also reserve the right to let volunteers go, if we feel things are not working out.

We do not charge a fee to volunteer at Rejoice nor do we provide any form of expenses for travel, living accommodation or food. All expenses must be met, in full, by the volunteer. However, we do hope that all volunteers will be creative in helping Rejoice generate funds. Volunteers can do this by helping and assisting with current fund raising projects, seeking out individual donations, or making a financial contribution themselves.

We greatly appreciate the time you have taken to absorb all this. Thanks in advance for your efforts and welcome to Rejoice.
